project 1a

so last night was our photo session with Holly..Allison did the make up and i took the shots..
I'll write more about it over the weekend as part of my research..
when i got in last night i processed some shots and sent them straight to Alli to ask what she liked and didn't like and was she pleased with how it went etc...

this morning she had put them straight on facebook.

have i got the right to feel annoyed that she did this without asking me?
was i being too precious about the photos?
she said she was proud of her work and wanted to show off..i said "so am I, they are my photos"
did i automatically loose all right to how the photos are used by sending them to her?
she did take the photos off facebook but i was bothered by it..

what do you think?
i am really happy with the photos but it has made me really cautious about sending her any more..

  1. I don't think she will have anticipated that you felt that way about them going on facebook. If it was me, I think I would feel a little miffed and I don't think you are being unreasonable in asking her to remove them. But it has made me think that if doing work for someone it is probably best to lay copyright and ownership of the images on the line from the start. I took some wedding pictures in Sept that the bride has given to their reception venue to use on their website... she did consult with me on this but her language suggested that she saw them as her pictures, not mine, to give away. There is a general lack of understanding out there over intellectual property and unless you are a writer/musician/photographer, it must be hard to understand why people get so worked up over this kind of thing.

Ultimately, my humble opinion is that you are well within your rights to ask her to take them off facebook and that you are not being unreasonable (especially when fb's t&c have some dodgy rulings over ownership of images once they are uploaded to the book of face). Perhaps for future shots you could either send her low res images or watermark the images so your name appears across them???

Btw, I LOVE the shots!!! x

  2. Kate's watermark idea is good. She should have asked and it's understandable that you're annoyed but you should take it as a compliment; no point falling out with her over it. Just be careful in future and make sure there's a watermark of your face or summat in there! Love the second shot - how did you process it?

    1. thanks Terry...just got to remember what he told us about how to do waterflippinmarks...
p.s. my camera did all the hard work processing this shot..it's called "dramatic art filter"

  4. Great images. I am sorry to hear about them being used without your knowledge, especially when I assume that she knew they were for your project? I am sure it will become water under the bridge now.

Watermarking or low res images is a good idea, we discussed it in class this week didn't we.

(last comment deleted for a typo! ;-))

  5. Another thing you could do (It's what I've done) is start a Facebook page for your photography. That way when you give someone photos and you think they may end up on Facebook, watermarked or not, just ask them to either link to or tag the photo with your Facebook page. Then it's a win - win situation really. They get the put the photos on Facebook and at the same time draw attention to and promote the the fact that it was your awesome work in the first place! Mine's at http://www.facebook.com/darrenlewisphotography . They're just as simple to set up as your own usual Facebook page
