project 1a

so last night was our photo session with Holly..Allison did the make up and i took the shots..
I'll write more about it over the weekend as part of my research..
when i got in last night i processed some shots and sent them straight to Alli to ask what she liked and didn't like and was she pleased with how it went etc...

this morning she had put them straight on facebook.

have i got the right to feel annoyed that she did this without asking me?
was i being too precious about the photos?
she said she was proud of her work and wanted to show off..i said "so am I, they are my photos"
did i automatically loose all right to how the photos are used by sending them to her?
she did take the photos off facebook but i was bothered by it..

what do you think?
i am really happy with the photos but it has made me really cautious about sending her any more..

project 1a

i went to the Lowry and saw an exhibition by Nadav Kander
"the collaboration between the photographer & subject is essential"

if only Morrisey if only

did he photograph Morrisey like this because as a person he is difficult to grasp....?

did he photograph Lili Allen in the blue because of her state of mind?

Alli and i went through the images i had taken and made some notes about what we liked and didn't like and how they could be improved..
i also took some more shots using a dramatic art filter on my olympus epl2..Allison likes them a lot but i think they look like animation she isn't wearing any make-up!.. and there's she's a plug switch which should not be there...

she's the client i suppose

i had a look on the internet at fashion photography and i read this  brief but full of great images and and easy read
Alison also brought this book for us both to read through and see what we liked and what could be achieved

here is a copy of a model release form which i will give to Holly's parents

project 1a

so i set about trying to work out some locations ready for the photoshoot. this is Allison the make-up artist.
the easiest thing for Alli myself and the model, is that we do the shoot after work - at work.
we work in a brightly lit health centre.

we will shoot two sessions 25th January and 1st February
on the first evening Alli will do some very simple make - up this means we can both to get to know the model and allow us to make some mistakes.
on the second evening she will do much more dramatic make-up and hair to show off her creativity.

i didn't have my tripod, speedlight, reflector or a change of lens whilst i was taking the shots below, we were simply looking for areas with well lit/interesting backgrounds.

i have processed these images with Nik software making them mono or softening some edges.

it was so useful to have this practice run because i was able to think about where to put the model, where i needed to stand, what positions work best etc.
the health centre closes at 8pm so realistically i will only have a couple of hours to shoot as much as i can.

this is Allison and one shot of Wendy and are some of the shots we both think will work well.

the other thing i need to do is print some of the images, especially the grainy black and white shots.
Allison needs good quality pictures for her portfolio and obviously i need to present mine too. the last thing i want is that the images look ok on a computer but are unusable in real life.

the following images are shots Alli and i agreed we both liked from Tyra Banks - America's Next Top Model tv show. I'm sure i can do something similar..

project 1a

all change...

so my friend/colleague has just completed a professional make-up artist course and together we are going to work on some shots for her portfolio.
we have recruited a model and have been sharing ideas about images, styles etc.

the first shot below is a national geographic entitled "circus" i think it's great but i know it won't show the make-up at all.

i'm really not sure where i got this little image from but i'd saved it about twelve months ago and used it as inspiration to take some portraits of colleagues. see below

these following shots are of my colleagues at work.
Allison, Collette, Allison again and Emma.
now i need to write my proposal!

the main difference/challenge for me with this theme is that i will have to create the image and carefully consider what i want it to 'say" or demonstrate.
this is new for me because most of the photography i have done until now has been very spontaneous, taking shots of what i see. the second and third image i have shown (above) of Allison and Collette were slightly staged. i asked Allison to lift her chin and Collette to close her eyes but that was all.
with this theme i will need to show off the make-up in different lighting situations, i'll have to consider colour and texture too. I'll have to guide the model and set a scene. i also have an idea that i want to photograph the process and show the make-up artist at work and perhaps a product shot of the tools to be used.
can i include watching all 16 series of America's Next Top Model as research?
